How do I set up syncing with Dropbox?

This document will show you how to set up syncing with any combination of devices running MoneyWell. The steps are the same for all versions of MoneyWell that use Dropbox syncing, but the Mac and iPhone versions you use must be compatible with each other. MoneyWell 2.0 for Mac syncs with MoneyWell 1.5 for iPhone, and MoneyWell 1.7 for Mac syncs with MoneyWell 1.2 for iPhone. Devices of the same type must have the same version.

To check the version on the iPhone, tap the gear icon on the main screen, then tap About MoneyWell. On the Mac, go to the MoneyWell > About MoneyWell menu.

Choose a Device to Initialize the Sync Data

First, decide which device has the document you want all your other devices to have. Then follow the directions for starting sync with your selected device.

Starting with MoneyWell for Mac

  1. On your Mac, run MoneyWell and open the document you want to sync.
  2. Click MoneyWell > Preferences and select the Syncing tab.
  3. If you do not have Dropbox installed, click the link to sign up for a free account.
  4. If you just signed up for Dropbox, make sure to install the Dropbox client software on your Mac so the files will be synced.
  5. Click Configure Dropbox Sync in MoneyWell's preferences under the Syncing tab.
  6. Enter a password to encrypt your document and protect it during syncing. You will need this password to add additional devices.
  7. Enter the same password in the second box to confirm it and click Next.
  8. Click Start Sync… and select your open document from the pop-up.
  9. Close the Preferences dialog.

The Dropbox icon in your Mac's menu bar will spin while it syncs the files. Wait until it finishes spinning before continuing. Depending on how large your document is, it will be encrypted and posted to Dropbox within a few seconds or minutes.

Starting with MoneyWell for iPhone

  1. On your iPhone, run MoneyWell and tap the gear icon on the main screen of the app.
  2. Tap Sync via Dropbox.
  3. Allow MoneyWell to access Dropbox. If you have the Dropbox app installed on your iPhone, MoneyWell will use that to ask for permission. If you do not have the Dropbox app, MoneyWell will send you to a web page to authenticate to Dropbox.
  4. Enter a password to encrypt your document and protect it during syncing. You will need this password to add additional devices.
  5. Enter the same password in the second box to confirm it. Tap Next.
  6. There should be no documents listed. If there are, you may have previous sync data. If you are sure the data currently on the phone is the data you want to keep, proceed to overwrite the Dropbox data with the phone's data.
  7. Tap the Push Local Data to Dropbox button.
  8. Wait for the document data to upload.
