Syncing to MW Mobile

As a follow-up to your discussion on the iPhone App, I would appreciate if you could clarify whether MobileMe will be the only option for syncing to the desktop app with MoneyWell Mobile 1.0. Will there be any other method of syncing data available for those that can't justify $100/yr for a MobileMe subscription? Or will that require patience for a future version?

::Fingers crossed:: Thanks!

Kevin, Perhaps also consider using DropBox in the first release. 1Password uses it for syncing and it's pretty much instantaneous.

The nice part about MobileMe is that it updates individual records and does the syncing against a secure database backend run by Apple. MobileMe also lets you sync your email, contacts, appointments, etc. with your phone and the new Find My Phone is very cool. Sorry for the MobileMe sales pitch but I think it's a great service.

We'll also be offering a WiFi sync over Bonjour but that may not make the initial release.

DropBox and other folder shares won't work because: 1. They don't work with the iPhone, and 2. They don't allow you to be in the same document at the same time.

Good to see the new discussion thread format. Will you be posting alerts for those of us who may be interested in signing up for the Beta testing of the MW iPhone app? Thanks.

I agree that MobileMe is a very cool service - but for me it would be like getting the digital cable package just so I could see The Daily Show. I'd love to get it, but I would use only a fraction of the service.

I'll await Bonjour support with great anticipation. Besides allowing me to be the cheapskate I am, I appreciate "keeping it local." ;)

    Thanks!

I'll try to make sure Bonjour doesn't lag too much behind the MobileMe sync.

I don't know why I suddenly heard that song. I need to stop letting my wife-elect choose the radio station in the car. I seriously want to buy you a beer, though, and toast the general awesome-ness that is No Thirst. Unlike so many others, you do not disappoint!

Kevin, I too would like to cast a vote for a free form of syncing. I'm really getting the hang of MoneyWell and agree with Druzyne, that you've got a great product here. I'm still on trial, but will be registering soon. I have no use for MobileMe currently, but to have MoneyWell on my iPhone, to enter those on-the-go expenses would be wonderful. To have to pay $100/yr to sync the two would be counter-productive to the reasons for using your product to begin with!

Thanks for your feedback. I do understand that MobileMe is expense for some people so I will offer WiFi syncing. I do think it because much more valuable with the new iPhone features and I really like that I don't have to sync my iPhone all the time just to have my contacts, appointments, etc. in sync on my phone.

I agree with pretty much everything said above by Terry, Kevin and Druzyne. I too will be anxiously awaiting the wifi sync version.

Sorry to be off topic, but I guess since this board is new I couldn't find any info on what people are using for a current iPhone solution. In other words, what have people found to work best just for transferring transactions.

    Thanks, Eric

I happen to have MobileMe, and I think that using it for syncing is an outstanding idea. In fact, I never would have hoped for such an excellent feature.

The only thing that has prevented me from trying MoneyWell is the lack of support for Direct Connect Bill Pay. This is the one thing I actually like about Quicken, and I am very reluctant to give it up.

If I could enter a transaction in to my iPhone, have it instantly synced to my computer via MobileMe, and then just as magically have a check mailed out from my bank, I would weep tears of joy. That, or wet myself. Possibly both.

Bill pay (for supporting banks) is coming in a future release.

Yes, I'd heard that. Any idea when, or is it just "someday"?

It was planned for the upcoming 1.5 release but I've had to shave some features so it can ship with MoneyWell for iPhone so I can't guarantee that will make the cut. It's a high priority feature though so it is near the top of the list.

Responding to Eric, I currently use QuickBank on my iPod Touch. It exports each account to a QIF file, and then purges the transactions exported, so that they do not export again, (the transactions do remain in the program, they're just purged from exportable status). I was using this program with Quicken, and I have just continued using it with MoneyWell.

The only drawback is there is no way to sync back from MoneyWell, (or anything else for that matter). Sometimes I fall behind on the iPod, so I have to go in and manually catch it up. Or, if I'm really behind, I just make "adjustment" entries in the register to bring up the balances to par with MoneyWell. I usually use the program if I'm traveling.

I'm looking forward to MoneyWell Mobile and the ability to sync in both directions!

I really hope the iPhone app comes out before my trial of MobileMe expires later in August. As of now, the $100 for MM is not worth it but if MoneyWell and MM work well, I'd keep it.

Need a beta tester? I'd gladly send you a UDID for any of my devices for a provision! I can give you UDIDs for several 3GS's or Touch 2G's with several OS versions from 2.2.1 through the new 3.1 beta 3 for testing.

    Todd,

This is OT for this conversation, but since it's about saving money, and that's what MW is for, here goes.

Don't buy MobileMe direct from Apple, it costs too much. Try any of the Apple resellers. I personally, every year, buy my MobileMe Family Pack on eBay for about $70. A single seat goes from about $50 on up.

Todd: I don't think you'll be able to test the syncing by the end of August. Sorry.

If MobileMe isn't worth it without MoneyWell syncing, I'm not sure I'd get it just for MoneyWell.
